Our journey in winemaking is deeply rooted in family tradition, spanning five generations of the Rivero family. It all began in 1899 when our great-great-grandfather, Olegario Rivero, founded Bodega Rivero in Arnedo, La Rioja. What started as a small operation producing and selling wines for the local community has since grown into a globally recognized venture. Over the decades, each generation has played a role in shaping the winery’s evolution. Today, we have the privilege and responsibility of leading Marqués del Atrio into a new era, building upon the legacy established by our father and those before him.

Our greatest source of learning has been firsthand experience—traveling to different wine regions, exploring international markets, and gaining a deeper understanding of global consumer preferences. These experiences have given us a broader perspective on winemaking, distribution, and branding. Beyond that, we continuously seek inspiration from industry leaders by attending wine fairs, participating in masterclasses, and engaging in discussions with experts who challenge conventional thinking and push the boundaries of winemaking.
We are currently experiencing one of the most pivotal moments in our winemaking journey. After years of dedication and a relentless pursuit of excellence, we have brought our most ambitious project to life—the transformation of Marqués del Atrio. This marks not only a new chapter for our winery but also the culmination of generations of passion and commitment. We are redefining our identity, elevating the quality of our wines, and expanding into new markets with renewed energy and vision.
Working in Mendavia, at the heart of Rioja, is a constant source of inspiration. The region’s extraordinary terroir and deep-rooted winemaking tradition motivate us to push boundaries while honoring its essence. Rioja is synonymous with heritage, yet it is also a region in motion—continuously evolving. It is this balance between tradition and innovation that drives us forward.

The greatest joy comes from witnessing progress—whether it's refining our wines, expanding our reach, or innovating how we present Marqués del Atrio to the world. There’s something incredibly rewarding about bringing an idea to life, seeing it take shape, and ultimately sharing it with people. The biggest challenge, however, lies in keeping pace with an ever-evolving industry. Consumer preferences, market dynamics, and even climate conditions are constantly changing. Adapting to these shifts while staying true to our essence requires strategic thinking, agility, and a deep respect for our roots.
Tradition is the foundation of everything we do—it embodies the spirit of the Rivero family, the knowledge passed down through generations, and our deep respect for the land and its history. At the same time, innovation is essential for growth. We embrace new technologies, modern production methods, and fresh perspectives that allow us to connect with today’s consumers while staying true to our heritage. Striking this balance is a challenge, but it is also what defines our identity.

We are currently focused on evolving our brand identity to better reflect who we are today. In recent years, Marqués del Atrio has experienced significant growth, and we felt it was the right time to introduce a fresh, modern image to our consumers. This transformation goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about redefining how we communicate our values, showcase our wines, and share our vision for the future.

Sustainability is at the heart of our winemaking philosophy. Each year, we work to refine our practices, minimizing our environmental impact both in the vineyard and the winery. We believe that preserving our land is not only an ethical responsibility but also essential for maintaining the quality and longevity of our wines. By prioritizing sustainable methods, we ensure that future generations can continue to cultivate and enjoy the richness of our terroir.
One of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned is that wine is more than just a product—it’s a reflection of culture, tradition, family, and social connection. Every bottle tells a story, and as winemakers, we have the privilege of shaping and sharing those stories with the world. As we continue to grow, it’s essential to never lose sight of this essence, because at its core, wine is meant to bring people together.
